Securing of sustainable agricultural and fishery resources

Support for sustainable agriculture and fisheries

While continuing to make full use of ingredients sourced in Okinawa Prefecture, we will pursue initiatives to help secure sustainable agricultural and marine resources in collaboration with various stakeholders.

Active use of agricultural produce from Okinawa

Orion Breweries, Ltd. has succeeded in growing barley on Ie Island and in Nanjo City, Okinawa Prefecture, in collaboration with the University of the Ryukyus and other organizations. Barley harvested in Okinawa is currently used as a secondary ingredient in all of the Company’s beers. We also strive to support farmers in Okinawa Prefecture by making full use of fruits produced in the prefecture for our products, such as for fruit wine Southern Cross Winery Passion Fruit which is a fruit wine and chuhai series WATTA and natura.

Conservation of the marine environment and marine resources through land-based aquaculture

Orion Breweries, Ltd. has been participating in a research project of the Center of Excellence of the Sustainable Integration of Land-based Aquaculture with Agriculture to build the Resource Circular Symbiotic Society. We have been involved in this land-based aquaculture project, which is led by the University of the Ryukyus (Ryudai), ever since its inception. The Company provides malt lees, which are discharged during beer production, as feed for farming Malabar grouper, marketed as Ryudai Mibai. Since Ryudai Mibai is on the menus at The Orion Hotel Naha and The Orion Hotel Motobu Resort & Spa, customers with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with one of the Company’s sustainability initiatives via a memorable dining experience. By pursuing this initiative, we will continue making efforts to help ameliorate food insecurity and poverty while conserving Okinawa’s marine environment and securing its fishery resources.
